I would like to start off this week by sending my condolences to John and Josie over the loss of Serene. Though nothing I say can bring you comfort, just know that Serene lived the best years of her life with you. You taught her what love was, and what it meant to be part of a family.. Your kind hearts made a difference in her life, and I hope you find comfort in knowing that.

The pack seemed at odds today, maybe they also sensed what was missing.
Mariah seemed more nervous than normal, and was a little less interested in the meat I brought.. She wouldn't come up to me the way she did last weekend. A few times she acted as though she wanted to, but she never did.
She did manage to get pretty close to Skylin though, and ate out of her hand a few times. Of course Skylin was pretty impressed *S*

In starting, I just want to thank John and Josie for a great afternoon..

My daughter Skylin has been bugging me to take her to see John's pack, so finally today I did.. We brought over a couple pounds of stew meat, and Skylin really enjoyed feeding Mariah and Wrangler..

I thought maybe today I'd be able to get a little closer to Mariah. I was hoping the stew meat would do the trick.. NOT.. What I learned is that you need to be a 45 pound rug rat to attract Mariah's trust.. Haha.. Within the first hour, Mariah gave Skylin kisses on her hand. Skylin thinks it's funny and has been teasing me all night about it.. Haha.. She keep's saying "you're jealous huh?"

I can't say the stew meat was a total bust, Wrangler let me give him a pat on the head, and he actually licked my hand.. Awww, he's such a sweetie.

I'll keep bringing over treats, one of these days it will click for Mariah that my visits are actually a good thing.. I'm not in any hurry, I'm really enjoying the time I spend with her and the rest of the pack (including John and Josie) and again, I'm thankful for this opportunity..

(everything I do) I do it for you

I first met Mariah on February, 04, 2001.
She's a 2 year old female pure wolf that came from a wildlife
auction at a zoo in Ohio, by way of a rescue in New York state.
She was then shipped to John Braden of Tundra Shepherd Rescue in Phoenix, Arizona when she was 4 months old.

She has remained true to her nature, and is extremely shy. My goal is to gain her confidence and possibly grant her some of her own. I want her to know just how loved she really is..

I'm hoping that someday she'll allow me to touch her. I can't think of a greater gift.. I thank you John for this awesome opportunity..

I will continue to update this page as Mariah and I get to know each other..

Not much to say really, she didn't get to much closer to me than she did last weekend. Maybe a foot or two.

I tried to bribe her a little with some treats Josie (John's wife) gave me. I tossed them a few feet in front of me hoping she'd come get them. The first one I tossed, she was a little hesitant to retrieve. After about 5 minutes though she got up enough nerve to go after it.. The next 2 I tossed, she was quick to come get. Slowly I'll just keep tossing them a little closer to me, until someday she'll just eat them right out of my hand.. <wishful thinking>

Anyway, I'm hoping to visit at least every Sunday.. More often if John and Josie will have me.. <hint, hint>

This is definitely a challenge I'm enjoying.

I'd say we made a little progress today, wouldn't you?
Last weekend Mariah wouldn't come within 6 feet of me to get her meat, today she took it right out of my hand.. She awed me to say the least, it was an incredible feeling looking into her eyes at such a close range.

She was still pretty nervous, as you can see by how she stretched her body as far as she could. Haha.. We still have a long way to go before we reach belly rubs, but I feel pretty good about how things went today *S*

I didn't take any photos today, instead just had a real nice visit.
Wrangler knew right away what I had hidden in my purse today, I think he's caught on to the fact that when I come over, he gets a tasty treat.

Mariah ate from my hand again today. I was happy to learn that it wasn't just a fluke that she had done it before. She was a little rough today though, my thumb is still sore after about 3 hours now..  <smile>

It was a beautiful day today, and proven to be a pretty lazy one at that. While John, Josie and I all talked around the patio table, Mariah and Wrangler slept.. By the time I went home, I was ready for a nap myself. Haha..

Anyway, another great visit :)

I will probably start updating this page monthly rather than weekly.. Not a whole lot happens from week to week, and I'd like to keep this page at least semi interesting.. Haha..

WOW, has it really been a year and a half since I've updated this page?
Can I just say that I've been really busy or would you rather hear the truth that I'm extremely lazy?  Naw, I prefer the busy thing..

Actually, John and I have joined forces to rid the world of homeless, abused and/or neglected wolfdogs and place them into loving and forever homes.

Everyone keeps telling me "you can't save them all"
My reply to them is "yeah? Watch me"

UPDATE 2008

It's been a long time since I've updated the Mariah page.  I thought about taking it down because it's so old, but for me this is still a great memory and a reminder of how it all began with Tundra Shepherd Rescue.

For anyone who might be wondering, Mariah is still alive and well, and still a respected member of the Runamuck Pack over at John's.  She never did become the "pet" I'd hoped she would be, she's still as wild as ever and that will never change.

Ok, I know this was pretty brief, but it's better than nothing.....right?

Until next time............
